Frutti di Bosco, Coconut & Pistachio Gelato

While I enjoyed Barcelona and Rome, in many ways they were like any other big city in terms of hustle and bustle. Florence was much more relaxed.

Caramel Gelato with Hazelnut Spread

Gelateria dei Neri was the BEST gelato I’ve had on my Euro trip. I accidentally ordered the Nutella topping thinking it was dark chocolate gelato but was a tasty surprise. I went back for more …

I did have a bad gelato experience at a random shop at the end of the Ponte Vecchio bridge (don’t know which end but steer clear of any gelato place at the ends). I’ve had better gelato from the frozen aisles of the supermarket than that tourist shop! It was icy and not smooth.. with strange artificial flavors. It was the saddest scoop I had.

While staying in Florence, we also made a day trip to Pisa to see the leaning tower. I had the most amazing toasted sandwich there from a food truck parked right outside the S. Rossore train station. Cheap and delicious, it was definite comfort food on that on and off rainy day. Google their FB – Pizzeria Papà Ninuccio Viaggiante! I didn’t get a good photo since it was rainy out. Travel tip: Watch for your bags when getting out of that station! I nearly got pick-pocketed walking up the stairs by an older lady holding a piece of cardboard. Luckily I noticed and turned around to yell which scared her off. As my coworker warned: Watch out for ladies holding babies and cardboard boxes.

florentine steak

Bistecca alla Fiorentina

Excuse this terrible neon sign lighting. Florentine Steak was highly rated as something to try, and I was really looking forward to going to Trattoria Sostanza. Unfortunately the above steak was not from Sostanza. =_= The potatoes were crispy delicious but the T-bone was nothing to rave about. I had read that Trattoria Sostanza was really good for their Florentine steak, brown butter chicken and this artichoke omelet dish. On our second to last day we had a hard time finding it, and it appeared closed so we decided to come back the last day. We didn’t realize it would really be so popular that we needed to make reservations either so when we went back on the last night we still weren’t able to try it as the waiter told us they were fully booked for the night. When the tripadvisor forums say reservations recommended, you listen to them!
